Since 2002, AgAmerica has sponsored Ag-Apprentices and Crop Research in the Dooly/Crisp County area. Our Ag-Apprenticeship Program sponsors one-half of a high school apprentice or college intern's salary in a local farm, agribusiness, or ag agency. It encourages youth consideration of ag-related careers and also encourages agribusiness investment in youth training (as co-sponsors in the program). This program is conducted in cooperation with area high school vocational programs, and with students in Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's ag programs. AgAmerica has worked with area Extension Agents to expand local crop research programs. The agency has sponsored a research assistant and helped provide funds for additional test plots, equipment, and supplies for the Crisp Area Melon Research Center. This research is pertinent to area growers, as Crisp County is renowned as the "Watermelon Capital of the World". Plans are in the works for expansion into other crops as well. Key Benefits
To learn more about the Crisp Area Melon Research Center and its ongoing projects, contact Ken Lewis, Georgia Cooperative Extension Service-Crisp County (229-276-2612).
